"Arnold Schwarzenegger has been sworn in as whateverth governor of our nation's largest state."

Me thinks that Alaska and Texas might have problems with this designation.

Largest in population. Yes, "most populous" would have been a better choice of words. But then half the listeners would think the announcer had said "most popular," and that'd be a whole 'nother can of worms.

Well, yeah, that's what I figured they meant, but.... When you say 'largest state', I pretty much guarantee that's not the definition people think of immediately.

You don't have to convince me. I'm the one who curls my lip at the radio at least a few times a week over sentence construction, misplaced modifiers, etc.
